The Agile Electrification Project modeled four strategies:

 

  • Do Nothing: Keep using electricity and natural gas.
  • Install Solar Only: Generate electricity but keep gas appliances.
  • Electrify On-Grid: Switch to electric appliances but rely on utility power.
  • Electrify with Solar: Install solar while switching to electric appliances.

 

The study found Electrify with Solar maximized savings and independence.

The study analyzed 60 homes, averaging 2,000 square feet, primarily using natural gas. Findings include:

 

  • Solar alone provides strong returns: Installing panels yielded an average net present value (NPV) of about $42,000.
  • Electrifying without solar isn’t cost-effective: Homes that switched to electric appliances but stayed on the grid had the lowest net present value.
  • Oversizing solar systems is key: Increasing your solar installation by 60% above current use supports future electrification needs. 
  • Electricity rates are rising fast: PG&E rates have climbed 10.33% annually over five years.
  • Defecting from the grid increases long-term savings: The average home with 65% grid defection, where homeowners use self-generated power and rely less on the grid can save the average home an estimated $150,000 over 20 years.
